La Creu Alta 2006, Bodegas Mas Alta Priorat
A supreme expression of Priorat, this is a blend of 60% Carinena, including an incredible portion of 100 year old vine fruit, together with old vine Garnacha. Deep, dark, purple red colour. The nose is closed but there is clearly a powerful core of dark chocolate and black forest gateau flavours with a touch of liquorice and subtle balsamic notes. Pure with black cherry and black currant flavours combining with creamy vanilla. Beautifully juicy yet intense palate. The tannins are again incredibly fine and of a melting nature. This is very young, with oak and dark, brooding fruit dominating the minerality which clearly lies beneath. Needs three or four years before it will begin to show its true class. Very high quality. This is very deep and opaque in appearance, with toasty, black-cherry fruit held in check on the nose. The palate is bold and mouthfilling with a great sense of dimension. There is a serious volume of wonderfully ripe fruit yet with a precision peculiar only to great wines. Layer upon layer of black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, awesome power and refinement in one glass – a very intoxicating style with a mineral, terroir-driven vein. Château L'Eglise-Clinet 2007, Pomerol
Denis Durantou believes 85% to 15% to be the most perfect blend for Merlot and Cabernet Franc and one that he employs in this wine. Deep glossy purple in colour with a black core. Perfumed cherry blossom notes precede a glorious array of dark skinned fruit on the nose with lovely toasted oak notes emerging. The palate is taut and mineral with a core of ripe, dark skinned fruit. With very fine tannins, this is long, juicy, fresh and laden with fruit. Part of the New Fine Wine Parcel.
